Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
What is PRP?
Platelet Rich Plasma is a concentration of platelets which circulate through the blood. Produced from an individual’s own blood, these concentration of cells are critical for blood clotting. The liquid plasma and platelets of the blood are required for cell recruitment and essential for cell multiplication and cell specialization that is required for healing. After a blood sample is obtained from a patient, the blood is put into a centrifuge, which is a tool that separates the blood into its many components. Platelet rich plasma can then be collected and treated before it is delivered to an injured area of bone or soft tissue, such as a tendon or ligament. PRP recently obtained FDA Approval for use in joints to accelerate healing with orthopedic surgery but is increasingly being used “off-label” for other applications such as aesthetic medicine, though specific FDA indication and applicable research are still pending.

The Look Younger MD Process
During a short office visit a small amount of a patient’s own blood is drawn into a 10 mL vacuum collection tube containing a proprietary separator gel. The tube is placed into a centrifuge and spun for 12 minutes to isolate the platelet- rich plasma. The contaminating red and white blood cells are located below the separator gel. The PRP is ready for use yielding ~6 mL’s of injectable PRP. At Look Younger MD, we apply PRP immediately after MicroPen microneedling to the face and selected body treatment areas, to create a conduit for the entry of the PRP’s growth factors–which stimulate the healing cascade and the promotion of collagen and elastin.
