Juvederm is the popular US cosmetic injectable filler used by physicians to lift facial wrinkles and folds to reverse the appearance of aging, manufactured by Allergan, a subsidiary of Actavis, a $23 Billion global pharmaceutical company. Comprised primarily of hyaluronic acid, a natural sugar normally found skin, it was first FDA Approved in the USA in June 2006 for the nasolabial lines (smile lines) which run from nose to mouth. It is now commonly used in other “off-label” areas such as for lip enhancement, other facial areas, body areas, and for scar revision, though specific FDA Approval in these areas is still pending. Juvederm is traditionally injected into wrinkles using a hypodermic needle to lift them, though increasingly, the revolutionary MicroCannula Technique (see Dr. Lee’s PRiME International Journal of Aesthetic & Anti-Aging Medicine article under “About”) is replacing the needle for less pain, less bruising, and less swelling.

How Juvederm Works
Juvederm is THE popular cosmetic injectable filler in the USA because it is a safe, effective and long lasting way to restore volume to many parts of the face. In it’s natural form, hyaluronic acid in the body metabolizes in only half a day. The Juvederm advantage is the chemical cross-linking which binds the individual chains of acid into a durable form which is resistant to dissolution. Once Juvederm is injected, hyaluronic acid can absorb up to 1,000 times it’s own weight in water, dramatically lifting the sunken folds in your skin to take on a revitalized, more youthful appearance–that lasts up to 12 months. Hyaluronic acid also binds with collagen–the principle support of human skin–as well as elastin to restore skin tension and structure. As we age, we lose the youthful structural integrity of the face due to involution of bone as well as dissolution of subcutaneous fat, primarily in anatomic fat pads, which provide the essential framework to support youthful skin. By restoring some of this structure, Juvederm significantly decreases or even erases lines and wrinkles around eyes, nose and mouth, cheeks and chin, while also diminishing acne scars and other skin imperfections.
What To Expect During and After Juvederm Treatment
Dr. Lee views Juvederm as an art form and takes an entire hour–versus minutes for assembly line practices–with an each patient to allow for the topical application of anesthetic cream to ensure a painless and precise procedure. He is the only National Instructor on the Advanced MicroCannula Technique to inject Juvederm in the State of Nevada. The MicroCannula is the revolutionary and safer way to inject Juvederm which minimizes bruising, swelling, and tenderness–for which few Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists have any training. After treatment, to further minimize redness and swelling, he recommends clients alternatively ice different treatment areas over the first hour. Any swelling typically subsides between 3-5 days leaving the contours of the face looking younger, softer and wrinkle free. If slight lumping later appears, Dr. Lee offers a complimentary follow-up to make sure your results are best. Unlike Artefill, Sculptra or Radiesse treatments where lumps are irreversible–and surgical excision is required to excise lumps–Juvederm is easily reversed by using the enzyme, hyaluronidase.
When Juvederm Injections Are Needed
Your face will tell you when you need to be seen again since your individual metabolism will determine how long it lasts–just for you. Another factor in the longevity of Juvederm is where it is injected, since increased movement will decrease duration and act to break down the molecular binding. For example, Dr. Lee estimates Juvederm in lips to only last an average of 6 months depending upon how much you talk, you eat, and use your facial expressions. In most other areas, Dr. Lee typically expects a need for a “touch-up” appointment about every 12 months.
